Crescent City Outreach wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to one of its founders, Sam Scaffidi, who spent many years of dedication out on the streets of New Orleans assisting those in need. For several years before joining the NOPD Homeless Assistance Unit in 2004, Sam was a regular at “The Wall,” an outdoor lot at Elysian Fields and North Peters where hot meals were brought and served daily to hundreds of needy people. He remained involved with “The Wall” until it disbanded in 2010. As part of the Homeless Assistance Unit with B.B. St. Roman, Sam helped expand the outreach services which the Unit offered to the community, developing it into a smooth response resource for the entire city. Together they soon realized that they needed to purchase items now and then to assist someone directly, and so they decided to create Crescent City Outreach as an entity to receive donations and make those all-important purchases of items.
Unfortunately Sam left us in December 2020, but he left behind a wonderful legacy of always doing everything to the MAX! Maximum commitment to the homeless, maximum assistance to the NOPD directly after Hurricane Katrina, relentless hours spent right up until the end serving and showering others with his gifts, his thoughtfulness, his humor and his love of life.
Thank you, Sam, for truly making a difference in so many lives. You would not believe how many homeless persons have asked about you and remember how much you helped them in their time of need. Your spirit lives on!
